I begin this reflection with a confession of ambivalence! Leading up to the Baptist World Alliance Women’s Summit and World Congress in Brisbane, I was frequently asked if I planned to attend. My answer was always a simple “no.” While I knew I would enjoy visiting Australia and could expect to be personally encouraged, it was an uncertain investment in my mind. Would the significant cost—in both time and finances—be worthwhile for our organization? What would I bring back that could truly serve our context?
Then, in late fall last year, I felt a prompting in my spirit to give it more consideration. I sensed a nudge to include our CBWOQ Board in the decision-making. Looking back, I believe that nudge was the leading of the Holy Spirit. There were people I needed to meet, things I needed to see and hear, and experiences that would enrich both my personal walk and the CBWOQ ministry. Many of these will take a bit of time to realise, but today I would like to share a few of my highlights.
The Value of Family
Our CBWOQ community is part of a large, global family. Like any family, we’re held together by deep-rooted ties—shared values, beliefs, and relationships—that create a strong sense of identity and belonging. I’ve returned with a renewed appreciation for our Baptist family and a clearer understanding of CBWOQ’s place as a valued, contributing member within it.
Stronger Together
Our Baptist family is expansive and full of life. It welcomes and celebrates the vibrant tapestry of our diverse yet united global community. Through affinity groups, we eagerly learn from and support one another, share our best ideas and resources. We rejoice in each other’s victories and stand with those who are struggling. There is space for honest wrestling and gracious support for those in need of healing, advocacy, or hope. Like all families, we have our share of quirks (!!), but this compassionate strength left a deep impression on me.
A Bigger Story
In Brisbane, we were invited into a vision far bigger than ourselves: the BWA 2033 Acts 2 Movement. This is a prayerful pursuit of a global Pentecost, celebrating the Church’s 2000th birthday in the year 2033. It’s a call to Spirit-led renewal and a holistic witness to the Gospel in every language and culture around the world. Even more inspiring is that our Baptist family is one of more than 100 other denominational families participating in this movement. Every one of us can be part of this movement right where we live. (You can learn more this at baptistworld.org/acts2-movement.)
Closing Reflection
I’m so grateful I listened to that nudge and for the wisdom of the Board in prioritizing this investment. Brisbane reminded me that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves—a family and a Spirit-led, global movement of faith, hope, and renewal. As we step forward, may we do so with courage and imagination, open to the new things God is doing in and through us. Although we are turning 150 in 2026, there is a story still unfolding, and we have a vital role to play.
Gratefully part of the story,
Helena
